Online learning allows for an unprecedented level of flexibility, allowing students to access information from any location with a computer and an internet connection. Furthermore, students can access course materials at any time, allowing them to fit classes into their busy schedule without having to worry about attending physical classes during particular hours. Moreover, due to the lack of physical presence from tutors and peers, students are also more likely to engage in discussions as they feel less self-conscious and shy about asking questions or participating in debates.

While the convenience associated with these free resources makes it hard to ignore their positive contributions, research suggests that online education might not be as effective as conventional face-to-face instruction. While the quality of course content may be similar between traditional and online courses, lack of real life interaction can impede student understanding of topics in some cases. Additionally, online education often lacks social interaction with peers that often helps motivate students to push themselves further in their studies when in a room full of other learners. Furthermore, certain exams or practical skills, such as laboratory work or patient interactions may not be able to be replicated effectively through a webcam screen.

However with effective guidance from professors who are knowledgeable about how best to design courses for virtual delivery – for example using videos lectures instead of lengthy written texts – it is possible for those taking on–line courses to gain the same number of skills and knowledge from such classes as those obtained from traditional face–to-face ones.
